Research and Planning: film magazine anyalsis

The genre of this magazine is a film magazine,  this film magazine is promoting a horror film I can tell this by the following:

  • The masthead is the largest font on the page in a yellow box.  The font inside it is black and red, which is the regular colours.
  • There is a 4 colour rule on this magazine is yellow, black, red and white.  The yellow is used in every sight and sound magazine as well as the the red and black, ironically the red and black match the genre of the film they are marketing.
  • You can tell it is a film magazine with the slug line positioned under the masthead and the issue number and barcode, is placed professionally.
  • You can also tell it is a film magazine with the subtitles at the left hand side of magazine.
  • The title of the film which is being marketed on the front cover is in bold red writing to stand out, underneath where the film is being described, it is the boldest out of the lot of articles at the side.
  • The image doesn't necessarily show a horror straight away.  The long shot image represents the female as an object with her short skirt.  She is also showing a lot of skin.  If we then look at her face we see how she is strong character, we also see there is fear in her face.
  • The background is a dark wall which compliments the horror is also plain so it is not distracting.
  • The target audience is between 25 - 50 but is academic so more for the middle to upper class.
The genre is a film magazine, the genre of film it is marketing is a horror we can tell this by:
  • The masthead of the film is the largest heading on the page.  The font colour red which is the usual colour for Empire.
  • There is a 3 colour rule which is applied here which is red, black and a light brown.  This helps show the genre of a horror film but also helps distinguish the film magazine.
  • The close up image represents the male as the bad guy in the film.  The facial expression show that things are mad and compliments the horror genre.
  • The side of the mans head is a door and door frame, this shows he is trapped and isn't allowed in somewhere as if he is after someone.
  •  'The shining' is the largest font on the image with subtitles about the film above it.
  • You can tell it is a film magazine by the barcode and issue number placed at the bottom right corner of page.
  • As the film magazine is a special edition, the slugline has been taken out.
  • The target audience is 25 - 40 working to middle class, if anyone outside of this bracket they must be highly interested in film.
